Music and comedy
Kick-start your year with live music. Check out the gigs going on in January at The Fortitude Music Hall, The Outpost, Black Bear Lodge, The Wickham, Woolly Mammoth and The Zoo. You can also catch local live music every Friday and Saturday at The Sound Garden. The Zoo has a jam-packed schedule, including BLUSSH, Sunset Junkies, The Bonnie Doons and Scottish punk rockers The Exploited. Or check out their Open Mic event on 6 January.
For more DIY entertainment, Blute’s Bar has karaoke on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and don’t miss Trivia Thursdays, Live!@The Wickham and Social Sundays at The Wickham for trivia fun and live tunes weekly. For big laughs from local comedians, head to Birdees for Mixed Bag of LOLs stand-up comedy every Friday night.

The annual Triple J Hottest 100 is one of the, err, hottest dates on the music calendar and the countdown to number one is on Saturday 23 January. Check out our Events Guide to see what pubs and bars will be streaming the countdown.

On Tuesday 26 January, head to Brunswick Street Mall for live tunes from local musicians from 3-6pm as part of the Australia Day on Brunswick event. Kick back and enjoy an array of free entertainment curated by The Zoo crew.

Food and wine
Start spreading the news – Cloudland has some top-notch dining and entertainment on offer this month. Hey Felicia! A Drag & Dine Musical brings the sass and style of musicals and revues on 8 January, or book for a night of classic entertainment and tantalising food with the Big Band Cabaret Dinner & Show on 22 January in the new Rose Room.
Another Rose Room to know is the new all-pink Turkish eatery at The Constance Hotel. The sister site of Dirty Sultan is a street-level cafe by day and function space at night and totally Instagrammable at all times. Italian-themed La Costa bar and eatery and Cielo Rooftop Bar are the newbies on the Brunswick Street block at the former Foresters site. Keep an eye out for La Costa Restaurant and an all-day wine bar opening this month.
Head to Bloodhound Corner Bar & Kitchen and other select venues to pop the top off a collaborative brew to celebrate 4ZZZ’s 45 years on the air. Sales of the Young Henrys West Coast IPA, H4ZZZY, will see 50 percent of proceeds go back to the community radio station.
